Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment alternative to traditional braces that uses clear aligner trays (teeth aligners) to adjust alignment and bite instead of metal brackets and wires.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign uses a custom-designed system of aligner trays that put gentle pressure on the teeth, gradually shifting them into the desired locations and alignment.

What Are the Benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign offers many benefits. The primary benefit is that the teeth aligners are made of clear plastic that is virtually invisible when worn. These trays are also smooth, making them gentle on the mouth's soft tissues. Additionally, they can be removed for meals and oral hygiene, so patients can continue enjoying their favorite foods throughout treatment.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

The cost of Invisalign can vary greatly depending on the length and complexity of a patient's treatment in addition to the patient's insurance coverage. At Preston Dental Loft, we're able to offer patients lower treatment costs (and financing options) because we treat such a large number of patients with Invisalign. Total treatment costs typically range anywhere from about $4,000 to $7,000.

Is Invisalign Only for Adults?

Invisalign is commonly recommended to adults, but it can also treat younger patients. Invisalign Teen is specially designed to accommodate teenagers' unique needs, such as their still-growing-and-developing jawbones. Additionally, Invisalign Teen comes with spare aligner trays (in case they get lost at lunchtime or at a friend's house). The aligner trays also come with color-coded indicators that fade from blue to clear when the trays have been worn for 22 hours, which helps teens and their parents keep track of their treatment.

What Kinds of Orthodontic Issues Does Invisalign Treat?

Invisalign can address a wide array of orthodontic issues such as crooked teeth, crowded teeth, tooth gaps, crossbite, open bite, overbite, and underbite. Invisalign is a highly versatile orthodontic treatment, but there are some much more complex cases that might still be better addressed with metal braces (or a combination of metal braces and Invisalign).

Is Invisalign Painful?

Some patients experience a bit of minor pain or discomfort when they first begin wearing a new set of aligner trays. This is because Invisalign must put gentle pressure on the teeth to shift them into the desired locations. The discomfort, however, is minor, does not last long, and is comparable to that experienced with traditional braces.

In terms of discomfort, the primary difference between braces and Invisalign is that Invisalign's smooth plastic does not irritate or cut the soft tissues the way metal braces can.

Will Invisalign Change the Way I Speak?

Every type of orthodontic appliance can have an impact on a patient's speech. For some patients, wearing Invisalign can initially cause a slight lisp. However, most patients' speech returns to normal after a couple of days of getting used to wearing and speaking with Invisalign.

How Long Does Treatment With Invisalign Take?

On average, treatment with Invisalign takes about 11 to 12 months. However, the length of treatment required to achieve your desired results differs for every patient and depends on the severity and complexity of the patient's orthodontic issues. The more complex or severe, the longer the treatment will require to achieve the desired results. As a result, the length of treatment with Invisalign can span anywhere from a few months to two years.

To achieve desired results, on schedule, the patient's trays must be worn for at least 22 hours each day and used in the order prescribed in the patient's treatment plan.
